Casino Maribor - a Company with Ambitious Plans

Casino Maribor, a joint-stock company employing 54 people that had an income of SIT 278 million (US$ 1.5 million) last year, is trying to become the leading company in the line of "gambling tourism" in northeastern Slovenia, Management Board Director Renato Kovac told the press on Thursday, 17 June.

Kovac believes Casino's prospective is to continue to advance the local tourist and catering supply with its high-quality services. To realise that vision the company is hoping to win a gambling licence. Casino filed a petition for a licence with the office in charge at the beginning of last May. The licence, which is expected to be granted by the government even before the parliamentary holiday, will according to Kovac change the company's financial operation. The casino will replace the present sales tax on gambling with special concession levies calculated on the basis of turnover in individual gambling games. About 50 percent of Casino's revenues will from now on go also to the Maribor municipality budget for promotion and development of tourism and tourist infrastructure.

Casino Maribor, which has recorded 260,000 guests (80 percent were Austrians) since its foundation nine years ago, intends to increase the overall income by 10 to 15 percent this year. In the following years the company plans to rebuild the casino into a modern gambling and entertainment centre with lodging facilities and its own parking place.
